Show up to training with all your gear!

1) Ipad Mini with at least 64G.

If you do not get the version with cellular service then consider buying a Sentry which will provide you the wifi capability need to have a moving airplane on your map as you fly and get local weather and traffic in the area. I have found that connecting to the hotspot on your phone does not work very well.

2) Foreflight subscription.

Foreflight is the premier aviation app that will be your EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) which will contain maps, FAA handbooks, Far/aim (Federal Aviation Regulations/Aviation Information manual), and a way for you to file flight plans and get your local weather. Think of it as Google maps on steroids. Go to the App store and purchase the $100 version. I have the $200 because Im a pro. Don’t worry you will also be one soon if you train with me ;)

3) Head set.

A head-set can cost you from $200- $1100. I use the Bose A20 head set with noise canceling and bluetooth. I Hear that the Light Speed Zulu head-set is a great option as well. I think I’ll be buying the Light speeds next. The Bose cables are wearing down on me and maybe Light speed has less built in planned obsolescence.

4) Yoke Mount

A yoke mount is a way for you to fix the Ipad in position so that it does not become lost in the cockpit and remains in a position that will allow ease of use to access the information stored in such as your moving map or approach charts for those IFR flights.

5) Three Ring Binder

Somewhere to store the loose pieces of paper that I or your flight instructor will be giving you throughout the training and somewhere to keep your own notes.

6) Log book

You will be needing to keep track of all the hours that you accumulate and your instructor will have to sign all the ground and flight training he/she provides to you. Foreflight has an excellent feature that allows you to keep a digital record with everything you need in it, but if you wish to use a paper version that is fine too. The DPE (designated Pilot Examiner) who will be conducting your final checkride will need to see proof that you logged and received the required training even before he begins the exam. The DPE will probable have collected his fee before you show him your logbook so make sure your requirements are met and all your endorsements are there and current. Where do you find the requirements? FAR/AIM part 61.
